Food vacuum packaging testing

Vacuum bag packaging refers to the packaging method by which products are put into the airtight packaging container and the air inside the container is pumped out, so that the sealed container can achieve predetermined vacuum, the vacuum packaging can maintain high decompression, and air scarcity is equivalent to the effect of low oxygen. Therefore, microorganisms do not have the conditions for survival, thus keeping fruit fresh and eliminating corrosion.

The main role of vacuum packaging is to remove oxygen and help prevent food from spoiling. And its principle is also relatively simple, because food mold spoilage is mainly caused by the activities of microorganisms, and most microorganisms need oxygen to survive. By making use of this principle, the oxygen inside the bag and food cells is extracted, so as to make microorganisms lose the “living environment”.

Custom vacuum seal bags are mostly used for food packaging and storage, so it is necessary to test the whole system of vacuum packaging and verify the reliability of vacuum packaging according to the relevant standards of flexible packaging. There are three major properties of vacuum packaging bags that should be tested.

1. Barrier properties
Material barrier properties of vacuum packaging should be tested by mainly referring to GB/T 19789-2021, GB/T 1038-2000, GB/T 26253-2010 and other standards, which can analyze and solve the quality problems such as oxidation and moisture due to the transmission rate (amount) of oxygen and water vapor.

2. Sealing performance
The sealing conditions of vacuum packaging, plastic packaging bags and other packaging containers are detected by using “GB/T 15171-1994 Test method for leaks in sealed flexible packages”, which can effectively evaluate the sealing process and sealing performance of packaging parts.

3. Tensile strength
The electronic tension machine test can test mechanical properties of plastic film, composite film, aluminum film and other vacuum packaging materials such as stretching, peeling, heat sealing, tearing, etc. It can also be used in the medical industry for test verification of piston sliding and body tightness of syringes.
